It gets worse.

So I read further into my emailed response from AT&T:

"Customers intending to use the 3G iPhone for access to corporate email, business applications or access to corporate intranet are required to activate with Enterprise Data Plan for iPhone."

The "Enterprise" plan is $45/month. So, lets see - if I already had a gen1 iPhone I would get the 2.0 software (including corporate push email, app store, etc) for free, and get my corporate exchange email for the still-low price of $20/month. But if I want a new phone, the monthly charge is more than twice as much. Like I care if my TPS reports get to my iPhone slower. Maybe I'll start checking ebay...

AT&T Blows

Since this has turned into an iPhone 3G blog, here goes:

AT&T just shot themselves in their collective feet. Steve Jobs was brilliant at being able to market the new iPhone at $199. Wait for it... with a small subsidy from AT&T. Nobody knows how much exactly, but I think we're about to find out. Why, you ask? I just got an email reply from AT&T stating that 'regular upgrade eligibility requirements' will apply to iPhone 3G purchases. What does that mean? If you haven't had your current AT&T phone for at least 2 years, you don't get a $199 iPhone. No soup for you. They aren't even sure what the non-subsidized price is yet. We're less than three weeks out and there are going to be hordes of disappointed Apple fans (me) waiting in line at their local AT&T brick and mortar only to be turned away unless they pony up the dough.

With the inclusion of 3G radio gear, GPS and double the memory, I'm guessing we'll see non-upgrade eligible pricing near the same prices as when the original iPhone debuted. Lame, lame, lame. With uncle Steve undoubtedly having similar subsidy agreements with mobile telcos in 70 countries, I'd guess their market penetration will be very small compared to what it could have been. I'm glad I don't own Apple stock right now.

C'est la vie. I'll still be counting the day until I'm 'upgrade eligible'.

Sigh.

No iPhone 3g for me. Or anybody. It's really not like Steve Jobs to show you a new toy he couldn't sell you right then. I'm sure some Apple lackeys lost their jobs (ha!) over it. Oh well, I wanted to take the morning of July 11th off anyway.

I made sun-dried tomato pesto in my new Cuisinart today. It stains. Tastes good on a spoon, but I won't know for sure until there's pasta. Or chicken. Maybe it would go well with bacon on a sandwich. Bacon makes everything better. Mhhmmhmmh... Hungry.

My car goes in for its first oil change tomorrow, and to get rattles fixed. I HATE rattles. There should be some Nobel-ish prize for the first company to make a car that doesn't rattle and squeak. It really couldn't be that hard. If my (soon) iPhone can show me via GPS satellite exactly where I am on an actual photo - I should be able to buy a quiet car. Honestly. Crappy gas mileage, carbon-belching, whatever. Just don't rattle.

Hello world.

Blog post 1.0. This feels really weird, posting my random thoughts and expecting or even wanting somewhere anywhere in the world to read it. Wacky.

Um, not much to report. Got a hi-def Tivo yesterday, that was pretty cool. Looking for a 2.0 iPhone Monday, but I'll have to wait and see what uncle Steve says. I'm sure it will be rife with awsomeness.
